NEW DISCUSSION

Assignment or announcement?

ASSIGNMENT

About your previous assignment, I have to say that I am impressed how critical you can be to each other. I hope the spirit of learning has increased tremendously, outside our classroom. Basically, most of you agreed that parents should be held responsible for the wrongdoings of their children. When you disagreed with the topic, you have to give reasons why you chose to disagree, not to give other externalfactors that leads children to commit crime. You have to stay with the topic given. Do you agree? I would like to remind the discussion participants to keep the language as close as possible to formal one. Avoiding 'text messaging' language will be a great practice for your essay writing. Don't you think so?

Here is another topic to be discussed.

Maternity Leave Should be Extended to Six Months. Do you agree? Discuss the topic by giving your points.

Please do some Internet research on the topic with your partner. You may change your partner or stay with the same person for this assignment. This will be topic we will discuss in class next week after the TICE.

Deadline: 14 December 2009 (9 A.M)

I will post another assignment for you to do individually during the holiday starting Monday the 14th of December. Having holidays does not mean learning stops.

I have linked a website to give you some insight of what maternity leave is all about. This topic falls under the theme Family.

Till then, have fun discussing.

Please take note that...
Maternity leave, or parental or family leave, is the time a mother or father(especially mother) takes off from work for the birth or adoption of a child.

Anonymous said...

the good topic but hard to find the points...

Maternity Leave Should not be Extended to Six Months because:

1)wastes government money

government has to pay the salary for the six months leave.it wastes government's money.

2)decreases of employers productivity

due to the too long leave,it may cause the task which is given by the employers will be delayed or took over by the others.

3)adapt to the new condition(for the child)

it is quite hard to the mother and child to separate when the mother wants to go for work and leave the child at kindergarden.

dear madam...pliz comment on our points..tq

comment on ALI n AHMAD points:

erm...i agreed and disagreed on their opinion.First of all, what you mean 'workers productivity'? it incresed or decreased ? this points only i rejected.Others, higher jobs oppurtinities for male i totally agreed because nowdays male workers getting extinct,at least give few space to male even though i know that most female more better achievements in acedemic than male.Another thing i want to ask both of you, do women really going to do welfare job after just born a child.i think women won't have the times coz too buzy with the new born child. That all, forgive me if i incorrect, ccorrect me k.i still on lerning....=>

i srongly agree with this topic due to this following reasons:

can help mothers to focus on their work.

-if they have to work just after they deliver a baby, they will lose their focus on work because they will always think of their baby at home.

mothers have to feed their baby by breast feeding.

-as we know, mother's milk is important for a new born baby so, mothers have to spend their time at home to give their baby enough nutrition for their growth.

there is no place to leave the newborn baby.

recently, there is a lot of crime in our country, so there is no safer place for a baby except on our own guidance.

We agreed that maternity leave should be extended to six months in order to...

1)to gain confidence in her mothering skills

2)have fully recovered from the birth of her baby

3)improve the employees' loyalty

other extra points, fewer work absenteeism and greater work productivity..

It is solemly disageed that maternity leaves should be extended to six months and this can be alaborated from the aspects of mother's health, baby's health and working quality.

Akmawanie and Aisyah, not all mothers are first time mothers so I think there is no issue of adapting to new condition is a strong point. Your other points are fairly making sense.

Ali and Ahmad, don't you think your second point, higher jobs opportunities for male is made possible because women are missing from the workforce for 6 months? Do you believe that women are depriving men their jobs?

Zaini and Zuber, women are multi-tasking creatures. They are able to do many things at one time.

Fatin and Nik, do you believe that broken family is caused by working women? Decrease the probability of broken family indicates that women should be focusing on their children and home and because they are working, they have caused problem to the marriage?

Amy, you have done some homework on your own. Yes, breast-feeding is an essential part of the life of a newborn child. This is a good point why women should be given 6 months maternity leave. Could you find out how many months are mothers encouraged to breast feed their babies?

Nabila and Ummi, how can longer leave improve the employees' loyalty towards the employers?

Tasha and Fathihah, brief and sweet. However, can you elaborate more on the baby's health? Maybe I will ask you in class when we come back from the holiday.

Many have not met the deadline. I assume that there is no Internet connection where you are. Therefore, I have decided not to post another assignment. Please continue giving your two cents for this topic. Have a nice holiday too.

it improves by the greater quality of work can be produced if the leave is longer.. em, for example if one mother goes to work while it has not fully recovered yet, it will influence the quality of the work herself. From that, many problems will exist and the employer becomes fed-up and it is not impossible to fire the employee. what we want to say here, when the mother goes to work in good health she will produce a better work in future and the rate of her loyalty in a company is higher.

maternity leaves should not be extended to six months because

-raise an employer's costs to pay for the 6 months leave
-other employees may be burdened with handling the leave-taker's work
-employees who are not parents may perceive maternity leave as an inequity.

based on our first point,
6 months is quite a long period
equal to 120 days,i think it's more than enough..regarding to old people,6 weeks are enough for womb to recover after giving birth and the question about the infant is,mom has to find someone to take care of her baby.Maybe it's quite cruel to let the child with babysitter after birth, but what can mom do..we hve to think about other parties..but,it is just our opinion..if u come with better ideas,u are welcome to argue with us..;)

yes,u are right..they suffer a lot of pain..but dont u think that 6 months are too exaggerate for a mother to recover fully? as a dynamic worker,we need to limit our leisure time and fill it with benefit things, such as g0 and contribute your professional skills to the country.

Nabila and Ummi, point taken. A fit woman can be really productive at workplace. DOn't you think so?

Husna and nuranati, teachers at schools when they are off for maternity leave, the schools have to find a replacement teacher, for example. In this case, don't you think that the schools are prividing temporary job opportunities for some who are unemployed?

Qilah and Nazatul, I do like all the three points you have. Can we discuss in great details in class on Monday?

Syahira and Hafiza, to balance the life as a parent and a worker. Could you explain that more on Wednesday?

Hafidz, your first point is a bit general. You have to make it more specified to a certain aspect of health.

Syahira and Hafiza, I agree with your point in refuting Hafidz's first point. However, I think Hafidz has some idea about how much pain a woman has to suffer giving birth to a child.

Zaini and Zubeir, how can a mother be more confident after coming back from her maternity leave?

Hafiz and Nureen, where did you ge the testimony?

Aisyah, better late than never?

Anonymous said...

It is true but it is temporary. The replacement teacher has to find new job because of the due is over. Therefore, it is not fair to the person replace.

What do you mean by employer's costs?
is that salary or what?
can you explain further......

From mr kajang

To mr kajang..

employer's cost??
of course when woman who had their maternity leave, of course that will be cost the company as they take 6 month leave paid.company have to hire temporary employee to replace the place, so salary for the one who had maternity leave and temporary employee must be paid. thus it cost the company double for 6 month.

I agree with the topic...
Maternity Leave Should be Extended to Six Months.
Because...

$$mother and new born child will have good health$$
-As all know,it's hard to deliver a baby..
-So,mother and new born child need to have a long time to recover.
-If the maternity leave is too short,it will cause many bad effects towards the mother's and new born child's health and it is proved by the facts.

$$Could give opportunity job to others$$
-someone needs to replace mother that is on maternity leave.
-indirectly it will give opportunity job to others..

$$Better quality of work$$
-mothers that fully recovered will be more focus to their works.

From,
Mr Kajang

I didn't agree with your third point...

{ it will take others opportunity to get the job}

Money, marriage and job are all in the God's Hand..
A lot of job opportunities in today's fast paced world outside there..
Other people can get the job when the employer need to find replacement for the mother on maternity leave right?
Eventhough it is temporary but we can get experience..

Mr Kajang
